What does a preamp and poweramp do?...

I have a sansui G-9000 reciver which is great. I want to try to "worm" up the sound with a tube amp if that is possable? I Dont know how a preamp or poweramp works?
Is it possable to use a tube amp with my G-9000 and if so how do I do this and what tube amp would work well??
