I know this is an old post but hopefully it will still help somebody. I had the exact same problem with my Sansui 881 Stereo Receiver and was pretty upset and ready to try and replace the unit.
I opened it up and tinkered around a bit and realised that each channel had some kind of protection fuse and the fuse for the left channel was blown. I replaced the fuses and its as good as new.
