The same thing happend to me, however when I plugged it in and turned it on everything seemed to be okay. Then when I turned the volume up to about half way I noticed it started to smoke. I then relized that the speakers were not connected to the unit. This is an indication that there must be a load connected in order for the unit to function properly. After hooking up all the speakers and turned on the amp with speakers connected all worked just fine. Hope this works for you.

Bob : My father just gave me his Sansui 5900z receiver. He indicated last time he plugged it in, it started to smoke. Where do I start in trying to determine the problem? What is the most likely component to have failed? Any help would be appreciated.
