I just tossed my receiver today after 25 years of good hard service. The power supply finally gave out. I had this same problem for the past 6 or 7 years. If you are not as ambitious to do it right, as indicated above - you might try quickly flicking the source selector (am, fm, phono, aux) back and forth with the volume set around 20. It always worked for me.
