Here are a few things that might be the cause as mentioned to me in an email from a knowledgable person I know:

Here are the causes I know about for flashing
protect light:
1. DC on the output caused by fault in the output stage.
2. Shorted transistor in the protection circuit, either in the output stage or relay drive/protection circuit.
3. Open capacitor in the protection circuit causing false tripping of the protection circuit.
4. Open or high value emitter resistor.

The other possibility, and this subject came up recently on www.audiokarma.org in the 'Exclusively Sansui' section regarding an AU-717, and that is the glue that is used to hold the circuit boards in place can supposedly become conductive which could affect the protection circuit.
